AN EXPERIENCE - by Theatre Newbie

Sleepless nights, bad vibes, constant worrying and many thoughts running through my head – these are symptoms of a person preparing for an audition. It was a mixture of nervousness and excitement. Due to my being of an almost perfectionist, I fear that I will not make it. All the what-ifs couldn’t stop swimming in my head and advises about good night’s rest and looking afresh the next day for audition soon went down the drain. Still thinking twice….

Since there will be no instruments accompanying me during the audition, I think Kau Ilhamku would be appropriate for the singing audition. It is upbeat, short and one of my best songs to bring out my vocals. I am not a fantastic singer or probably not anywhere near good so I have no choice but to choose the simplest song to keep me safe.

The day of my audition, I was still nervous, excited and trying to be cool at the same time. I have to be very confident no matter what. Susan Lankester auditioned me and I started off with a song. I was almost sure I would forget the lyrics... and when I knew I didn’t forget the lyrics or went off key, I started smiling inside. Phew!

Next, I was given a script and had to act out the given scenario. It was about a girl who had enough in her relationship and it’s time she ended it. We went through a few lines over and over again. I was told that I was holding back a lot. Truth is, I was. Don’t know why. Nervous, maybe. But after the entire audition ended, I was told that they will get back to me if I get to be part of the play. But as soon as I got out of the audition room, it felt as though I’m already part of the play because the audition has finally ended.. that I finally build my courage to go for the audition.

A few days later, I got through the audition and I couldn’t sleep a few nights after that. See what excitement can do to me – not healthy… at all. But over all, I am extremely happy that I have been given the chance to expand my exposure in theatre.

THE POP MUSICAL OF THE YEAR...

WHAT DRIVES THE HUMAN SPIRIT...?

When the team first began on the project...we were totally baffled by that question. However after endless nights of non-sleep and discussions and arguments, I think that the team now knows what is meant by that question.

The driving force of the human spirit lies very much in our passion. Our desire for life and our penchant to achieve perfection.

To bear the title, MALAYSIA'S FIRST SCI-FI MUSICAL is a big responsibility. And the team must do all that we can to see that it happens.

Science Fiction is not just another Genre

The first few names that come to mind when one speaks of Sci-fi movies are

BLADE RUNNER
TERMINATOR 1,2...
STAR WARS
4400
FIFTH ELEMENT
HEROES
AEONFLUX
E.T.
ALIEN, ALIENS... and more ALIENS

Science fiction is often thought of as a genre that speaks of what our tomorrows would be like... a depiction of what our future could hold by all these famous directors.
Will it be magical... as Spielberg predicts as a natural progression of articial intelligence, or will it be dark and bleak with constant antagonistic struggles of life as seen in most of Ridley Scotts' production and will our future be one that is void of human emotions... of a Verhoeven's cybernetic organismic nation built to outlast and is desensitized?

Whatever views we hold of this genre is borne out of questions which are eager for answers, of this life that we all live. The love and passion we put into our lifetime, what does it lead us to? What is it that makes the human race so special? What is it that sets us apart from other life forms? What makes the human spirit so indestructible?

Contrary to popular beliefs, science fiction is unlike any other genres. It is not one that can be classified by a certain setting or sequence. It is not just about space ships and hi tech equipments, it is not about flying men and supernatural powers and neither is it about monsters and aliens...It goes well beyond that. It questions of our lifes to come. It questions our futures at a supremely philosophical level. It questions our mere existence and those to come.
